Seven Souls Harrow Book 1 Volume 1 Elissa Stark 9780990315117 Books

Elissa Stark's debut novel reminds me of a mashup between the southern charm of the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris and the gritty complexity of the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning.

Seven Souls is populated by a fun cast of characters that immediately draw you into their world and leave you wanting more before the book ends. Unlike many series books out currently, Seven Souls completely wraps up the storyline before ending, so the reader isn't left with a nagging cliffhanger at the end of the book.

That said, I'm eagerly anticipating the followup due out later this year.

Seven Souls Harrow Book 1 Volume 1 Elissa Stark 9780990315117 Books Reviews

Phoebe is a police detective with special abilities she has had since she had an accident as a child. Simply put, when she touches some things, she gets a reading off them. Her parents went to great lengths throughout her life to help her and to shield her abilities. While visiting a school, Phoebe comes into contact with a little girl who tells her she will be involved in another accident, but will not die. When that comes to pass, an intrigued Phoebe debates reaching out to the parents, telling herself if the girl is special she might be able to help. Unable to return to work for medical reasons, although she is smart enough not to mention the voice in her head, Phoebe reaches out to single father, Jack. Turns out, Jack is a private paranormal investigator whose current case crosses over an old one of Phoebe's. He requests her help. Phoebe is skeptical, I mean come on, a paranormal investigator? As the bodies add up, Phoebe is drawn into territory she never knew existed. Angels and demons and the Netherworld, for real? At times, she struggles with her belief and, at others, totally accepts it. There is a lot unexplained in this story, and it stretches the imagination that Phoebe, the cop, did not demand explanations. Although she snoops around trying to get answers, she doesn't follow up on the clues. As a set-up book, it was at times confusing, but definitely interesting, and it left too many questions for the next one, some of which could have been dealt with in this one. If a guy ties me up in a garage, for purposes other than sex, he's definitely going to get his ass kicked and will have some 'splaining to do. Although Jack attempts to explain it, it is not until well after that we see, by the inside of the house, what had happened, kinda, although we never do find out the whole story. With Delia in her head being totally confusing, it's no wonder Phoebe wonders if she's going crazy. The plot was good and solid for the most part. I liked where it was attempting to go, and, although the romance between Jack and Delia got nipped in the bud, it has the potential to be scorching. On the whole an easy, enjoyable story to read, lacking a certain clarity, but intriguing enough that I will be looking for the next one.
Detective Phoebe Harris has the ability to read memories or emotions with a touch. It has helped her and her partner, Charlie, to expose and capture murderers and other criminals. Then, after an encounter with a psychic child, she begins to suffer from blackouts and "lost time" and hearing a voice in her head. She meets paranormal investigator, Jack Gregory, who is also the father of Tabitha, the psychic child. Jack enlists Phoebe's help with a missing person's case that he's working on, promising that he will answer the lingering questions about her blackouts and the voice in her head. As they investigate, the case evolves from a missing person case to a case with multiple homicides. Jack introduces Phoebe to the Harrow beneath the surface of their little town, to the other realms that meet in their little corner of Georgia and to the fact that angels and demons reside there among the human residents.
This book was very well written and I liked that the characters weren't static. They grow, learn, and mature as they go through their investigation and realize that there may be more to the murders than they originally thought and that the voice in Phoebe's head may be darker than they realize. I did like that there was a clear ending to the story, even though it's the first in the series. There were some questions about Phoebe's past and her abilities, and Tabitha's abilities and where she fit into the story. I am assuming that they are going to be answered as the series progresses and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book.
So great! I love Phoebe and her grumpiness, and toeing left with more questions than answers. Jack, our hero is swoon worthy and Victoria is a dazzling sasspot.

Can't wait for next book!
Simply put, this was riveting. I had the hardest time putting it down, and it got in the way of me getting good sleep on some nights when I knew I needed to get up in the morning. Harrow was an absolutely fun read and great story telling at the core. Makes me yearn for more. I look forward to the future books in this series.
